SENSEI ALAN PARRISH 5th dan |
Born in 1959, he took up the art of Shotokan Karate at the age of 14, back in the days of Bruce Lee fever in 1974. The main instructor at that first club was sensei Peter Waterhouse and the Hadleigh Club were part of the Thames organisation.
The following year the club joined the KUGB and by 1977 Alan had passed his 1st dan grading under Sensei K. Enoeda. 2nd dan followed in 1979, and 3rd dan in 1983.
By this time he was training 3 or 4 times a week under Sensei Enoeda or Ohta at the Marshall Street Dojo, and running his own dojo (club) twice a week.
Eventually he was invited to return and run the Dojo he started at as a beginner, which had now moved to Canvey Island. Throughout the 1980's he was very active in competition and won Regional and National medals in both Kata and Kumite events. In 1988 he passed the 4th dan grading examination at Crystal Palace.
In the late 1980's, early 90's, after some success at the Shotokan Cup, he was invited to train on the KUGB British Squad at the Red Triangle Dojo. Training with the likes of Frank Brennan and Ronnie Christopher was a great experience.
In 1993 Alan formed the Westwood Karate Academy with my wife Carol and Joined the UKTKF under Sensei Kawasoe.
In 1996 at the invitation of friend and former team mate Sensei Richard Amos, he had the chance to fulfil a dream of many Karateka and train at the JKA headquarters in Japan. Although the trip was over all to quickly, it is an experience he has always treasured.
In 2002 he retired from competition after competing for the UKTKF British team for 9 years. One of the most memorable moments of his career was an international championships in Egypt, performing the gold medal winning Kata on an open air platform in front of the Spinx and Pyramids at Giza - In the rain!
Alan continues to train hard with the inspirational Sensei Kawasoe, and In 2003 he passed his 5th dan examination and in 2004 was appointed coach to the E.T.K.F. England Team.
