If you would like to try the art of Traditional Shotokan Karate, we are currently offering new students the chance to train FREE for 1 MONTH. Our classes for beginners are running continuously, so there's never a wrong time to start. To begin with, you'll just need to come along in loose fitting clothing such as tracksuit bottoms/shorts and T-shirt/sweatshirt etc. If you prefer, you are welcome to come along and watch a class. To find a convenient class, please check our timetable. The same, free month's training offer, also applies to students who have trained before and would like to return to training by joining the Academy. TRAINING DETAILS When you join the Academy as a beginner you will train in a class consisting only of beginners, taught by your own Black Belt instructor. Each class is 1 hour in duration, and includes a short warm up. Because our beginners are taught separately from the coloured belts, you can join at any time and fit right in. the pace is slow and deliberate to start with, while you master the technical aspects of the techniques. As you progress, and your fitness and flexibility improve, you will soon be able to grade for your first coloured belt. With regular training, the coveted Karate black belt could soon be yours. We have classes for children and adults, and even some classes where parents can train alongside their children. CHILDRENS CLASSES We accept children from the age of 4 years. Our younger children (under 8 years) are known as Tiger Tots, we have a unique belt system that links the learning of techniques to special beginner belts. The system enables our instructors to tailor the training to each individual's needs, based on where they are in the system, and prepare them for their first TSKUK Association Grading. Children who join at the age of 8 years or older will learn the syllabus which enables them to enter the Association gradings and earn their coloured belts. From the age of 12 years children are approaching the cadet age group, and beginners may possibly prefer to join an adult class. This can be discussed over the phone or at one of our classes. ADULT CLASSES Aside from the family classes (see below) we have adult classes split into three categories, beginners, coloured belts, and black & brown belts. At some venues the classes run side by side with the children's classes, so parents would be able to train at the same time as their children, but not in the same class. At other venues the adult classes take place in the hour after the children's classes. FAMILY CLASSES It's great to take a real interest in your child's chosen activity, and what better way to do that than take part yourself. If you would like to train at the same time as your children, we have simultaneous adult and children's classes (different groups with their own instructor) running at the Clements Hall Leisure Centre, It's also possible to train in the same class as your child/children at the Shoeburyness Leisure Centre and Rayleigh Warehouse Centre venues.
