JKA OPEN SHOTOKAN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016
4 GOLD 3 SILVER 7 BRONZE medals for Westwood
Members of Westwood Karate Academy returned from representing the TSKUK at the JKA England Open National Championships with an impressive haul of 14 medals.
Gold, silver, and bronze medals were won by mother and daughter, Hayley and Hannah Mitchell. Hayley finished third in the kata event and won the kumite final to become champion. Daughter Hannah also reached the final of her 10-12yrs kumite event, and won the silver medal. There was more family success for Mason and Harrison Gill, who both reached the final of their kumite events. 19 year old Mason won gold against very strong opposition, to become champion of the senior black belt division. Harrison narrowly lost to a very strong Norweigan competitor, to win silver in the male cadet kumite event. |
Beth Stansfield rounded off a fantastic day for our senior competitors when she reached the finals of both the Ladies 21yrs and over events. In kata she won the bronze and in kumite she finished as runner-up.
Westwood’s most successful junior competitior was 14 year old James Harris. He also reached the final of both his events, winning the silver medal in kumite, but winning gold in the kata.
Another double kata and kumite finalist was 9 year old Megan Allen. She won bronze medals in both events. Her brother, Daniel reached the final of the 10-12 years boys kata event, and after a playoff narrowly finished in fourth place. Another kata finalist was Mac Oats, who also finished in fourth place.
Reece Ward and Erin Jackson also won bronze medals in their 13-15yrs male and female kumite events, and another kumite bronze medal winner was Alyssa Hall, in the girls 6th-4th kyu event.

FOUR NEW BLACK BELTS FOR WESTWOOD
On Sunday 6th November 2016, the TSKUK held their annual Autumn Course and 1st & 2nd Gradings. More than 400 students attended the two hour training course, and four Westwood Academy students were eligible for the black belt grading which followed. It was a 100% pass for the Academy and our congratulations go to Simon Hall, Justin Price, Steven Beavis and Trevor Stansfield, who all passed the 1st dan examination. |
WTKO EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016
The 2016 World Traditional Karate Organisation European Championships were held in Amsterdam on Saturday 1st October. The TSKUK sent a team of more then 30 members to represent England, and 14 students from Westwood Academy were part of the team. The Westwood team members were;
Daniel Allen, Eduardo Bayly-Gonzalez, Erin Jackson, Hannah Winning, Eleanor Worth, Brandon Gill, Henry Stokes, Reece Ward, Beth Stansfield, Mason Gill, Harrison Gill, Ryan Cooper, Charlie Tarr, and Marites Tomlinson. Everyone put in a brilliant performance, and returned home with a fantastic total of 8 gold medals, 4 silver, and 11 bronze. 18 year old Mason Gill became double European champion, after winning the 17-19yrs individual kumite (sparring) event, and then as |
a member of the winning England kumite team in the same age group. His brother, 16 year old Harrison won two silver medals, finishing as runner-up in both the 16-19yrs kata event, and as a member of the England B kumite team, along with Ryan Cooper. The youngest of the three Gill brothers, 14 year old Brandon, also bagged himself a medal as a member of the 10-16yrs kata team, with Reece and Henry, finishing in third place.
Henry went on to become European champion in the 13-15yrs individual kumite event, while Reece finished as runner-up in the Individual kata event. Daniel Allen, in his first international competition won bronze medals in both his individual 10-12yrs kata and kumite events.
The girls provided more European champions for England and Westwood, when the team of Erin, Hannah, and Eleanor won the 10-16yrs team kata event.
Gold medals were also won by seniors, Marites Tomlinson, and Charlie Tarr. Marites is the 35+yrs European kumite champion, and also won a bronze in the kata event. Charlie also won bronze in the mens kata event, and then won gold as the senior England kumite team became European champions. Charlie, Marites, and Mason Gill also teamed up to win bronze medals in the senior team kata event.
Henry went on to become European champion in the 13-15yrs individual kumite event, while Reece finished as runner-up in the Individual kata event. Daniel Allen, in his first international competition won bronze medals in both his individual 10-12yrs kata and kumite events.

WESTWOOD ACADEMY COMPETITION 16th OCTOBER 2016
There were 84 entries for our Autumn Junior and cadet competition, held at the Chase Sports & Fitness Centre in Westcliff-on-Sea. The event included Pairs Kata events for all children, Individual Kata categories for the black belts, and eleven Individual Kumite events covering all ages and grades.

TSKUK/WTKO INTERNATIONAL COURSE 24th/25th SEPTEMBER 2016
On Saturday 24th September Westwood played host to the annual TSKUK/WTKO International Course in Southend. Three fantastic instructors were in attendance. Sensei Richard Amos 7th dan, WTKO chief instructor, Sensei Scott Langley 6th dan, WTKO GB technical director, and special guest this year was Sensei Toshihito Kokubun 6th dan, former JKA and WJKA World Champion.
Students of all ages and grades travelled from all round the country to train, and the instructors taught for three hours each day, rotating round each group to make sure everyone got to expreience their classes.

TSKUK Junior & Cadet Championships 24th JULY 2016

The Traditional Shotokan Karate U.K. Junior & Cadet Championships were held at the UEA in Norwich. More than 250 students took part in the event.
Westwood Academy entered a large squad of more than 40 competitors, who between them, won a massive total of 63 medals, 27 of which were Gold. Westwood got off to a great start in the U11yrs events with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placings for Mya Francis, Victoria Turner, and Sienna Keenan in the female orange to yellow belt Kumite event. The winning start was followed by gold and silver medals for Anushan Kugathasan and William Middleton in the Kata event, and the same for Alyssa Hall and Jasmine Harmon in the female Green to Purple belt kumite event. Alyssa and Jasmine also teamed up with Finn Tyrell to win silver medals in the U15yrs team kata event. Another U11yrs gold medal winner was James Harris in kumite, while Silver medals were won by Brandon Aguinaldo in Kata and Anushan in Kumite. Carla Martin won bronze in the individual female brown belt kumite event, and then teamed up with Brandon and Mac Oates to win bronze again in the U15yrs brown belt team kata event. Silver medal winners in the same event were the team of Eduardo Bayly-Gonzalez, Justin Price and Ben Collins. |
Westwood students were even more successful in the 11-14yrs events. Double gold medal winner Grace Durrant won the orange to yellow belt kata, and then bravely entered a higher grade kumite category, when her own was cancelled, and brilliantly won it. The brown belt male kata event was won by Eduardo Bayly-Gonzalez, and Olivia Stone was runner-up in the female event. The Academy’s outstanding male competitor was Henry Stokes, winner of 3 gold medals. He won the black belt kata event, the black belt over 5ft kumite event and was a member of the winning over 5ft kumite team. His team mates were George Carson and Brandon Gill.
Brandon also won a silver in kumite and a second gold in the mixed gender Team kata event. His team mates, Eleanor Worth, and Hannah Winning were Westwood’s most successful female competitors on the day, each winning 3 gold medals. Aside from team kata, Eleanor won the individual kata, and Hannah won the kumite. They then teamed up with Erin Jackson to win the over 5ft team kumite event. Erin also finished second in kata and third in kumite.
The Academy’s under 5ft female kumite teams finished in first and second places. Gold medals winners were Caitlin Day, Nadine Martin, and Olivia Stone. Caitlin also won the black belt individual U5ft kumite event, with Nadine in third place. The runners up were the team of Megan Allen, Carla Martin, and Lilith Nesbitt. The black belt U5ft male kumite gold was won by Daniel Allen.
In the Cadet 15-17yrs categories, Westwood finished as runners-up in both the team kata and team kumite events. Harrison Gill and Reece Ward were members of both teams, with Ryan Cooper joining them in kata, and Dan Canham in kumite. Harrison won his third silver medal in the individual kata event, with Reece picking up the bronze. Westwood’s most successful Cadet was Steven Beavis, who won gold in both the brown belt kata and kumite events, with Dexter Goward winning the silver medal in both.
Brandon also won a silver in kumite and a second gold in the mixed gender Team kata event. SCOTT LANGLEY COURSE 25th JUNE 2016
Sensei Scott Langley, 6th dan, visited Westwood Academy for a two day course in June this year. On the Friday he taught exclusively for the Academy's instructors in a special class held at Clements Hall. The course proper was held at Chase Sports Centre on the Saturday, where he taught two classes, one for juniors, followed an adult only class.
WTKO IRELAND OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS 22nd MAY 2016
Eleven Westwood Karate Academy students were selected to represent the U.K. at this year's World Traditional Karate Organisation Open Championships in Dublin Ireland. The TSKUK team topped the medal table, and Westwood students won gold in seven events, two silver, and four bronze. Charlie Tarr, a senior instructor at Westwood, won the mens individual kumite, and lead the team to a win in the events most prestigious event, the mens team kumite. One of the Academy's other senior instructors, Marites Tomlinson reached the final of both the individual kata and kumite events, finishing second in the kumite, but taking gold in the kata. |
18 year old Mason Gill, and 16 year old Harrison were both members of the mens senior kumite team who, along with Charlie Tarr, won the gold medal in style as Mason spectacularly swept his opponent in the final fight of the day.
Mason's second gold medal of the day came when he defeated younger brother Harrison in the final of the 16-19 years individual kumite event. It was a brilliant performance by Harrison to reach the final, having this year moved up from the younger cadet age group. He even reached the final of the senior mens kata and finished a creditable fourth.
Youngest brother, 14 year old Brandon won the family's fourth and fifth gold medals by winning the junior 5ft2" and over kumite event, team mate Daniel Canham was third, and then he teamed up with Erin Jackson and Hannah Winning to win the junior mixed team kata event. Earlier in the day, Mason had also competed in team kata (mens), and along with Charle Tarr and Ryan Cooper they finished in bronze medal position.

BLACK BELT GRADING 24th APRIL 2016
More than 300 students attended the TSKUK Spring Course held in Southend. Following the two hour course, six Westwood Academy students took part in the black belt grading. Amy and James were attempting the 2nd dan grading, and the rest were going for their black belt 1st dan. We're delighted to say that they all passed with flying colours. Congratulations go to James Cox, Ellie Worth, Reece Hawkins, Nadine Martin, Eleanor Pepper, and Amy Freeman.

Westwood Karate Academy members won a total of 12 GOLD 10 SILVER 20 BRONZE Medals at the Bracknell event.
Dexter Goward and Neil Harmon dominated the men’s coloured belt events, with Dexter winning both the kumite (sparring) and the Kata (forms) events. Neil was runner-up in kata, and third in kumite.
13 year old James Harris performed just as well in the equivalent boys events, becoming champion in kata and finishing 3rd in kumite.
The brown and black events are where the Westwood students really excelled. Henry Stokes won the 12-13 years over 5ft kumite category, and club team mate, George Carson was second. Henry also teamed up with Reece Ward and Harrison Gill to finish as runners-up in the junior team kata event. Erin Jackson won the girls junior kata and Eleanor Worth was third. Eleanor also placed third in the 12-13 years over 5ft girls kumite event. In the girls under 5ft category, Caitlin Day went one better, finishing as runner-up, with Hannah Winning placing third. In the 14-15 years over 5ft category, Reece Ward and Steven Beavis finished joint third.

Team mates in the last two events were Morgan and Marites Tomlinson.

The year got off to a great start with a world class Course conducted by three of the WTKO's top instructors. Chief instructor sensei Richard Amos, 7th dan, WTKO chairman sensei John Mullin, 8th dan, and WTKO GB technical director, sensei Scott Langley, 6th dan. The course is held over two days, day one in Norwich, and the second day here in Southend.
