japan tour
In April 2019 Westwood Academy chief instrucors, Alan and Carol Parrish undertook a 10 day training tour of Japan with members of the WTKO. The group trained in four different dojos and the grounds of an ancient Buddist temple.
The first class on the schedule was a visit to the famous Hoitsugan, Nakayama sensei's personal dojo. This was the first of two visits during the trip to train with Leon Montoya sensei. It was a fantastic experience to train in such a historic dojo. Following this, we left Tokyo to travel to Takamatsu where we gave a demonstration to 400 Japanese high school students and were in turn treated to a demonstration of Iaido. Our next training session took place at 5:00am in the grounds of the ancient Zentsuji temple, another incredible experience. Back in Tokyo, we had the chance to visit and train in another dojo full of history, Keio university. Funakoshi sensei himself, taught at Keio, and we were lucky enough to be able to train in the Mokuyokai ("old boys") class alongside experienced students and instructors such as 90 year old Iwamoto sensei 9th dan who trained with and was graded by Funakoshi sensei. The following day, 26th April, we visited Kamakura and paid our respects at Funakoshi sensei's memorial on the 62nd anniversary of his passing. Later that day our training session was with Norio Kawasaki sensei. The next day was a busy training day, following our second class at the Hoitsugan, we travelled to the KWF headquarters for two classes, the first with Otsuka sensei, and the second with the 92 year old Ibusuki sensei. Another great day. Our final class was with the amazing former JKA instructor, Akihito Isaka sensei, a great way to round off the trip of a lifetime to the home of Shotokan Karate. |
